Beaumont Police Department Chief Jimmy Singletary welcomed three new officers into his law enforcement “family” during a ceremony at the downtown station Sept. 9. Joshua Hall, Demond Janise and Willie Melancon were sworn-in as BPD officers, all taking an oath to protect and serve the community they now represent.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a reported of a motor vehicle crash on I-10 near Smith Road in Jefferson County.  The crash involved one vehicle which was a truck tractor semi-trailer.

At approximately 5:20 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety reported a three vehicle crash Thursday, Sept. 8 on Highway 62 near I-10 in Orange County.

Hearing no opposition, the Beaumont City Council is set to vote on annexing nearly 80 acres of West End real estate at the end of September. The move, according to city Planning and Community Development director Chris Boone, has been in the works for a long time, and was approved by the city’s zoning commission in May.

“We started this back in May,” he said. “But there’s still a lot that we have to do.”

A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Michael Turner on a charge of criminally negligent homicide for shooting at a vehicle leaving the Express Mart at 2920 Jimmy Johnson Boulevard in Port Arthur on July 2 following an alleged theft. Two men entered the store, grabbing several cases of beer and exiting to a parked car. Shalala Fletcher was waiting in the parked vehicle.
