Kumer Das, associate professor of mathematics, has been tapped as the director of the newly-established Office of Undergraduate Research. Reporting directly to the Office of the Provost, the research office is temporarily located in the Lucas Engineering building.

“I’m deeply honored and humbled to have been selected for this position,” Das said. “This is a wonderful opportunity, and I’m looking forward to working with our students and faculty.”

A man in Orange was arrested for possession of a controlled substance after being reported as suspicious for running between hotels while wearing a "LCM girl's track hoodie," police reported.

A Port Arthur man was assaulted and robbed early Monday morning, Sept. 16 in the 1000 block of West 14th Street, the Port Arthur Police Department reports in a press release.  The victim, a 30-year-old black man, advised police that around 1 a.m. he was approached by several black males who assaulted him and took his money, according to a PAPD press release.

A suspect led police on a dangerous high-speed chase through the streets of Orange, actually traveling in the wrong direction on a one-way road during the pursuit and exceeding 95 mph in instances, police reported. Police arrested 30-year-old Dustin Hickey of Orange for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felony evading in a vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance after they say he fled in a stolen car when officers attempted to stop him during a stakeout at approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.

La’Tisha Vargas, an event planner with the folkloric ballet troupe the Golden Triangle Hispanic Association, invites the community to attend a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16. Vargas’ dancers, various bands, numerous vendors and others will be on Crockett Street in Beaumont on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1 p.m. on for a pageant and festival to commemorate the occasion.
