There isn’t a day that passes that Beaumont nurse Brenda Garison doesn’t think about how distracted driving can cause horrendous consequences. In just the time it took for a driver to fiddle with his phone – allegedly sending pictures and surfing the Internet – she lost three members of her family in a five-car pileup that also claimed the life of another man.

Several area law enforcement officers, including members of the Beaumont Police Department’s SWAT team, had the rare opportunity to train with world-renowned instructor Marcos do Val, the founder of the Center for Advanced Tactical Immobilization (CATI), who was in Beaumont on Sept. 28.

Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s assistance in getting dangerous drug dealers and drug users, along with the poisonous products they carry, off the streets. To that end, The Examiner will periodically feature a list of five persons accused of drug-related crimes here in High Five.

“Crime Stoppers and The Examiner are teaming up to fight the drug problem in Southeast Texas,” Beaumont Police Officer Carol Riley of Crime Stoppers said.

President of the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas John Paschall resigned, according to a statement issued by the Board of Directors on Sept. 19.

Paschall’s resignation was effective Sept. 13.

“John has served the organization faithfully since October 2011,” the board said in the release. “We want to thank him for the five years of dedicated service to the consumers and businesses of Southeast Texas.”

Narcotics Task Force officers discovered 137 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on eastbound I-10 near mile marker 839 on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 12:09 p.m.

The white Chevrolet truck was pulled over for “following too closely” and “unsafe lane change” according to the statement. The officer conducting the stop noticed a strong scent of air freshener, which is “commonly used to mask the smell of marijuana.”
