Beaumont City Council approved rezoning

Tuesday, Feb. 28, Beaumont City Council approved a resolution of support for establishing a new, municipal management district that could lead to residential and retail development on property at the corner of Dowlen and Delaware. The council also approved rezoning that will lead to the development of a new shopping center and residential area on Major Drive near Village Drive.

After a few withdrawals from the race for Beaumont ISD Board of Trustees, district election coordinator Georgia Antoine announced Feb. 24 that a “final list” of candidates has been forged. According to Antoine, Feb. 24 marked the “last day for a candidate to withdraw” for the upcoming May 6 election.

“Dishonesty” and “a lack of fitness” are just some of the reasons the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy contend former Beaumont ISD auditor Gayle Botley should have his Texas CPA license revoked, pay administrative costs of at least $14,669, and pony up an additional $25,000 administrative penalty.

“The death is on our hands,” Orange County Judge Brint Carlton said.

Carlton was speaking about the death of inmate Robert Montano, who was held in the county jail “observation bubble” on suspicion of bath salts intoxication for four days in 2011 until he died of renal failure. Carlton confirmed that no evidence has even been produced to show that Montano was ever under the influence of any intoxicant, but he was instead a diagnosed mental health patient without prescribed medication.
