The public is invited to the 13th annual tribute to Orange County veterans 6 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Heritage Veterans Memorial Plaza, 3810 MLK Drive in Orange. The event is free.

Held annually on the plaza on the campus of Orange First Church of the Nazarene, the program includes special speakers, patriotic music and more.

Motorcycles are a popular mode of transportation in Texas with more than 440,000 of them registered in the state. With an increase in the use of motorcycles in the last decade, motorcycle safety and awareness is of great concern to riders and law enforcement. Motorcycle operators are encouraged to wear safety gear at all times and to drive defensively, while car and truck drivers are cautioned to watch out for the two-wheeled machines motoring along the highways and byways along with them.

G.D. “Gene” Bush, age 83, died peacefully May 14, 2016, at his home in Beaumont, Texas, surrounded by his family.

A gathering of family and friends was held Wednesday, May 18, at Claybar Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow Thursday, May 19, at 2 p.m., also at Claybar Funeral Home. Burial in his hometown of Whitewright, Texas, will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.

Federal Judge Marcia Crone has spent nearly a year sifting through hundreds of legal documents filed as part of a civil racketeering case against roughly three dozen local, state and federal officials, as well as local media outlets and representatives, lodged by former Beaumont Independent School District administrator Jessie Haynes and contract electrician Calvin Walker. The total number of defendants in the case is dwindling, however, as just this past week two more were dismissed entirely from the litigation.
