Two injured in multi-vehicle crash

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 on July 13, near Mile Marker 857. According to DPS, the preliminary crash investigation indicated at approximately 3 p.m., a 2008 Dodge pickup, driven by Eugene Breaux, 69, of Sour Lake, was in the right lane.

Helping hands wanted

Henry’s Place, located at 1107 McFaddin in Beaumont, is currently seeking volunteers to allow for extended hours to help membes of the Southeast Texas homeless population.

No new rates

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) Actuarial & Underwriting Committee met on July 18 and recommended that the TWIA Board of Directors vote to make a rate filing with no change in residential or commercial rates when it meets on Aug. 2.

According to an announcement from the Nederland Independent School District (NISD), federal spending that allowed schools to serve free meals for all students during prior years was not provided for the 2022-23 school year.

Remembering together

Southeast Texas Hospice, 912 W. Cherry Ave. in Orange, will hold its annual memorial service on Thursday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. This memorial service is held in memory of all patients served by hospice and will include prayer and music. Hospice Chaplain Rev.

LOSD board OKs staff raises

A proposed Compensation Plan calling for employee raises was approved for the 2022-23 budget by the Lumberton ISD Board of Trustees on July 14. Board President James Kersh noted the Compensation Plan is part of the budget process and salaries make up about 80% of the annual budget.

STEM for the summer

Aspiring scientists learned to formulate and create using BASF chemistry at the BASF Kids’ Lab Camp from July 11-15 at the Beaumont Children’s Museum. The BASF Beaumont site and the BASF TotalEnergies Petrochemicals LLC site in Port Arthur sponsored the camp for the seventh year.

Some cities report decreases in allocations

According to the July 2022 Sales Tax Comparison Summary Reports published by the Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s Office, four cities in Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties had a decrease in sales tax allocation compared to the same period in 2021.

Hardin County Tax Assessor-Collector Shirley Cook reported a slight increase in delinquent taxes compared to last year.
