Sheriff Mitch Woods campaigns for re-election in 2012.

Since 1996, Sheriff Mitch Woods has been a steady hand enforcing justice for the benefit of the citizens of Jefferson County. This week he announced he would not seek re-election.

At about 7:19 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, officers with the Beaumont Police Department arrived in the 2200 block of Sweetgum Lane in response to a reported disturbance involving a man shooting a handgun. Upon arrival, officers learned from witnesses involved in the disturbance that the shooter, 36-year-old Gerald Downs of Beaumont, was nearby in the vicinity.

A tire blow-out caused a head-on collision near Warren early this morning, sending an elderly man to the hospital.

Just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, a 17-year-old male was driving himself and a 13-year-old passenger to school in Warren in a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver was traveling westbound on FM 1943 when approximately four miles east of Warren, a tire blow-out on his truck caused the driver to veer into the eastbound traffic lane, colliding head-on with a 2006 Ford pickup truck.

According to Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)spokesperson Sarah Dupre, Texas Sterling Construction Company has been named as the new contractor on the Concord Road project in Beaumont’s North End.
