Wednesday, Oct. 26, about 8:30 am, Beaumont Police responded to the parking lot of Home Depot at 3910 Eastex Freeway in reference to a theft.

The officer completed a report for theft of copper wiring from the back of vehicle in the parking lot. A witness came forward and gave the license plate of the suspect vehicle. Officers located the suspect, Jerome David James, a 58-year-old Beaumont man, in the 1100 block of Cottonwood, but James fled the area on foot. A short time later, James was apprehended near Live Oak and Grand.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, about 11:55 PM, Beaumont Police responded to Bryan’s Convenience Store located at 190 N. 23rd Street, in reference to a robbery.

Investigation revealed that two black males entered the store, one armed with a handgun. The suspects demanded money and threatened to harm several people inside the store. The victims complied and the suspects were last seen fleeing the store on foot.

A memorial fund to assist the family of Orange County Sheriff's Captain Tom Ray has been set up at the Gulf Credit Union, 4721 Texas Hwy 87, Orange, TX 77630. Capt. Ray died unexpectedly Oct. 20 of an apparent heart attack leaving behind a wife and two sons.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Narcotics Task Force discovered approximately 3 kilos (6.6. pounds) of cocaine during a traffic stop Oct. 24, reports the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

When the new Port Arthur Police Chief Patrick Melvin addressed the Press Club of Southeast Texas on Oct. 20, he said he wants to “engage the community,” especially young people. He also referred to current tensions involving police, explaining how he hopes to help officers combat stresses and provide resources for dealing with mental health concerns like PTSD.

Speaking at Café del Rio in Beaumont, he began with his past experiences in Arizona and in traffic enforcement in Washington, D.C. He said he “learned a lot from the Salt River community.”
