A Beaumont man pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and received eight years in prison for the death of James Lunsford, who was killed in March 2012.

Appearing in Judge Layne Walker's court, Jesus Thomas Ruiz pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter Monday, May 6, in the March 14, 2012, killing of Lunsford.

The Beaumont Public Schools Foundation’s grant caravan visited local campuses Friday, May 3, to “grant” the wishes of a number of students and staff of BISD. Several grants were distributed during surprise presentations to the student and staff winners who applied for funding for items to be used for special projects at their schools.

Four students from Smith Middle School received grant awards along with six staff members from various campuses around Beaumont.

Lamar University voice students from the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music earned numerous award placements in a regional voice competition at the University of Houston.

Students competed in the annual Greater Houston Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) classical auditions in April.

Country Music Hall of Famer, Grand Ole Opry member, Kennedy Center honoree, and local born-and-bred singer/songwriter George Glenn Jones died Friday, April 26, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He was hospitalized April 18 with fever and irregular blood pressure. He was 81.
