Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a one-vehicle crash in Newton County that claimed the life of 31-year-old Kirbyville resident Derik Dewayne Claxton, reports Sgt. Stephanie Davis.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 12:14 p.m., the Port Arthur police and fire departments received a 911 call reporting a major accident at 39th Street and Memorial Boulevard.

Officers responding to the scene “found one vehicle engulfed in flames,” a PAPD release said. After the fire was extinguished, responders discovered one occupant inside the charred vehicle.

Bonnie Marie Cokinos, 82, of Beaumont, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, in her home. She was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Beaumont, to Mildred Boden Sohlinger and Barney Richard Sohlinger, and was a lifetime resident of the area.
