Galveston Island is full of rich history. Spanish explorer Jose de Evia named it in honor of Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid, Count of Galvez, in 1785. Pirate Jean Lafitte called the island his home until 1821 when forced out by the U.S. Navy.
The Beaumont Rotary Club will host John Malcolm Bales, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, as the guest speaker at the organization’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 14. Rotarians and their guests will join Bales in the grand ballroom at the Elegante Hotel as he discusses “Bridging the Gap Between Law Enforcement and the Communities it Serves” over lunch.
Justin Tyrone Young, 35, remains in Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 bond facing a murder charge in the Jan. 9, 2014 death of Alexis Neal, a 22-year-old woman who died in a fatal collision at the intersection of Long and 11th streets.
