For the 10th year in a row, Big Thicket National Preserve participated in the Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program. Blanca Jones, a first-grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School in Port Arthur, worked as TRT from late May into early August 2015.

Monday, Sept. 7, there will be no interruption in garbage, heavy trash and yard waste collection. The city’s landfill will also be open on Labor Day during regular scheduled hours.

A Jasper County deputy arrested one man after a K-9 deputy discovered a large quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reports.


As a result of the recent rain, effective Wednesday Aug. 19th at 2 p.m., Jefferson County lifted its burn ban. In a press release, the county asked residents to watch wind conditions while conducting outdoor burning and never leave an outdoor fire unattended. Also, when burning brush piles, make them into smaller, more manageable piles.

An Orange man died in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 73 Saturday afternoon after he was reportedly rear-ended by another driver who fell asleep behind the wheel.

At approximately 1 p.m. Aug. 15, a 2009 Ford pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the outside lane on Highway 73. According to Trooper Stephanie Davis, it is believed that the driver of the Ford pickup truck fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended a 2010 Dodge pickup truck. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to drive off the roadway and roll over.
