A Port Arthur man has been sentenced to life in prison for the stabbing death of his aunt.

Lawrence James Jr., 44, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury May 17, 2012 for murder, a first-degree felony.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Examiner, police discovered the body of Bettye Loretta Davis in a state of decomposition inside her home on March 30, 2012.

Two Southeast Texas companies, ExxonMobil and Invista, were hit with fines for air pollution violations from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) amounting to a combined total of $100,626.

This was part of a larger statewide effort by the TCEQ. According to the agency, a total of 42 regulated entities were fined $540,711 for a variety of violations.

Commissioners proclaimed June “Men’s Health Month” in a Monday, June 2, meeting of the Orange County Commissioners Court.

Assistant District Attorney Bridgette L. Williams takes her oath of office before Judge John Stevens of Jefferson County’s Criminal District Court. Stevens swore Williams in as District Attorney Cory Crenshaw’s newest prosecutor Monday, June 2. According to a press release, Williams beat out at least 70 other attorneys for the job of prosecuting mostly misdemeanor cases in Judge Langston Adams’ busy County Court at Law No. 3.
