A Beaumont man was sentenced to 10 years probation after pleading guilty to injury to a child Monday, April 15.

K.P. Jeanes, a former assistant pastor of the Woodlands Baptist Church, was originally charged with indecency with a child, but after talks with the young victim’s family, prosecutors allowed Jeanes to plea to the lesser charge of injury to a child.

The youngster was 9 years old at the time of the offense.

President James Simmons announced the honor during a ceremony April 10 in the University Reception Center of the Mary and John Gray Library. The University Scholar Award is the most prestigious research honor bestowed upon a faculty member at Lamar.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deaths of 15 cattle found shot in a private property area of Mansfield Ferry Road in Vidor. Sheriff Keith Merritt said his office was alerted to the incident Monday, April 15, at approximately 8:50 a.m. by a concerned citizen traveling by the scene of the crime. According to a press release from Sgt. Chad Hogan, the cattle were all female and included several calves.

Stable-Spirit is having a Flapjack Fundraiser on Saturday, May 4 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill, 4375 Dowlen Rd. in Beaumont. Tickets are $5 for all the pancakes you can eat and a beverage. Some of these funds will be used to pay for the hippotherapy portion of the program that insurance will not cover for families who are clients (or former clients) of Stable-Spirit and/or Kids Therapy.
