When the halftime shows end at the close of football season, competition season begins for the Nederland Westernaires drill team. There is little time to waste when preparing to go up against some of the largest schools in the Houston area at Regionals. The team of 44 Nederland High School students practice and polish routines ranging from Pom, Kick, Military, Jazz, Ensembles and more and then show off their precision, technique, choreography and grace to a panel of judges. Some schools at these Regionals have more than 100 dancers on their teams.

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

Beaumont City Council approved rezoning

Tuesday, Feb. 28, Beaumont City Council approved a resolution of support for establishing a new, municipal management district that could lead to residential and retail development on property at the corner of Dowlen and Delaware. The council also approved rezoning that will lead to the development of a new shopping center and residential area on Major Drive near Village Drive.

After a few withdrawals from the race for Beaumont ISD Board of Trustees, district election coordinator Georgia Antoine announced Feb. 24 that a “final list” of candidates has been forged. According to Antoine, Feb. 24 marked the “last day for a candidate to withdraw” for the upcoming May 6 election.
