Cattle Barons’ Ball, in asso­ciation with the American Cancer Society, is celebrating its 24th year of givin’ cancer the boot at the “Boomtown Bash” on Saturday, Nov. 9, in the stockyard barns of Ford Park in Beaumont.


A Port Arthur elderly couple is dead after what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide.

The couple has been identified by Port Arthur Police as John and Patricia Knight, both 76 years of age, and residents of Port Arthur.


In his first attempt, Calvin Carter placed fourth with artwork he created for the 2013 U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s federal duck stamp contest. Carter’s work was narrowly edged out of the top three spots by one point. His work will be included in a traveling show to promote wildlife conservation. The contest is the largest wildlife art competition in the United States and this year drew 202 entries.

Buddy Walk 2012

The Beaumont Buddy Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Beaumont Event Center, 700 Crockett St. in Beaumont.

The Arc of Greater Beaumont’s Beaumont Buddy Walk is one of over 250 Buddy Walk events planned in cities across the country this fall in and around October in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month.


The babysitter who was watching 5-year-old John Read of Vidor when he accidentally shot himself and died on Oct. 21 has been arrested, according to a news release from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
