A Beaumont man sustained minor injuries trying to fight a kitchen fire at his home on Campus Avenue Tuesday morning, Sept. 16.

Once he realized he could not extinguish the fire, he then drove to Fire Station No. 3 and reported to firefighters his house was on fire, Beaumont Fire and Rescue said in a press release. Fire suppression units responded to the home, where they discovered the kitchen on fire. They conducted fire suppression activities and were able to extinguish the fire within minutes.

The building, which last housed the old Club Signature — a nightclub that has been closed for several years and fell into disrepair — collapsed around 12:30 p.m, said Capt. Earl White from Beaumont Fire and Rescue. It was tagged as substandard by city officials in 2013, he said.
