Lamar University

The Lamar University Jack Brooks Chair in Government and Public Service will focus on substance abuse when it hosts the 2013 Brooks Conference Thursday, April 18.

Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Lamar Institute of Technology Multi-Purpose Center, at Jimmy Simmons Boulevard and East Lavaca. 

Dawn Mathis of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Houston will be the keynote speaker for a luncheon from noon to 1:15 p.m. Other guest speakers include Shane Howard, Jefferson County tax assessor-collector.

A Port Arthur man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for stealing paint. 

Gerald Franklin, 47, went to trial for the theft of 5-gallon buckets of paint he stole from an elderly woman in Port Arthur Aug. 2, 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are recognizing 118 awardees for their commitment to saving energy and protecting the environment. Recipients of the 2013 Energy Star Partner of the Year Award include Houston companies CenterPoint Energy, Hines, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, and Transwestern and Beaumont’s Entergy Texas.
