Southeast Texans commemorated Memorial Day 2016 during numerous events throughout the area, celebrating fallen heroes who laid down their lives in service of the United States of America.

In Beaumont, Forest Lawn Funeral Home held its annual ceremony Monday, May 30, beginning in the chapel and continuing into the cemetery where ceremonial wreaths were placed at the veterans’ memorial wall in memory of the fallen and the missing.

At its May 26 meeting, the 10-member Texas State University System Board of Regents approved the official concealed handgun policy for Lamar University students, employees and visitors that will go into effect Aug. 1.

The policy, created to comply with Senate Bill 11 and now posted online, pertains to individuals licensed to carry a handgun under Texas law. The policy addresses concealed carry of handguns only. Open carry of handguns remains unlawful on the LU campus or premises.

At the Jefferson County Appraisal District Board of Directors meeting Wednesday, May 25, several concerned citizens, as well as employees of the appraisal district, had their voices heard in the public forum.

May 26, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas added another prosecutor to the sentencing case of former Beaumont Independent School District administrators Patricia Adams Collins Lambert and Victoria Steward. According to a filing at the court, Assistant United States Attorney Robert Wells of Tyler was added as co-counsel in the case.


Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s assistance in getting dangerous drug dealers and drug users, along with the poisonous products they carry, off the streets. To that end, The Examiner will periodically feature a list of five persons accused of drug-related crimes here in High Five.

“Crime Stoppers and The Examiner are teaming up to fight the drug problem in Southeast Texas,” Beaumont Police Officer Carol Riley of Crime Stoppers said.
