June Knight de Leon

Longtime lakeside resident June Earline Knight de Leon died peacefully in her Chula Vista home on Nov. 5, 2015, at the age of 79.

Knight de Leon was born December 22, 1935 in Beaumont, Texas, the daughter of Christine Collins and Harry Knight. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1955 and attended Lamar College of Technology (later advanced to Lamar University), receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1967.


In an effort to draw more people and more businesses to Vidor, the city is providing tax abatements in several reinvestment zones for new residential construction and for substantial home improvements totaling $15,000 or more. In addition to the tax abatements being offered to promote growth, city code enforcers are identifying and have identified several substandard residential buildings for potential demolition. 

The actions are part of the city’s “Pride and Progress” initiative.


Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) has named Anita Frank principal of Pietzsch-MacArthur Elementary. Frank currently serves as principal of Fletcher Elementary. Assuming the role of interim principal of Fletcher Elementary will be Gloria Guillory, who currently serves as assistant principal. Both will assume their roles effective Monday, Feb. 1.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) has selected Calder Woods for a new Reminiscence Therapy program designed to help residents with dementia.

Reminiscence Therapy uses tangible prompts, such as tactile objects, recordings and familiar items, to stimulate discussion of past activities and experiences, according to the DADS website.

Calder Woods is one of 50 facilities DADS chose to be a part of the program with an additional 50 to be added in 2016.


Beaumont native Jay Bruce, right fielder for the Cincinnati Reds, presented The Arc of Greater Beaumont with a check for $81,000 on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Foundation for Southeast Texas.
