Teachers and staff at Charlton-Pollard Elementary School in Beaumont are encouraging their students to perform "Acts of Kindness" and then recognizing the good deeds of their young charges.

According to Counselor Earline Mitchell at the school, “At Charlton-Pollard Elementary School, we know that one small thoughtful gesture can make someone else’s day. Kindness is contagious and we want to pass it around. We are teaching our students that their greatness is measured by their kindness.”

Jimmy Simmons Boulevard officially became part of the Lamar University landscape Friday, March 1, 2013, with the unveiling of street signs and a tribute to Simmons and his wife, Susan, in the historic McDonald Gym.

The Pep Band and national-champion Cheerleading Team added Cardinal Spirit to the occasion, while two rows of Simmons children and grandchildren – including three new grandchildren in strollers – brought proud introductions from the stage.

According to a press release from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD Community Relations Coordinator Sherry Combs, four LCM High School seniors were recently accepted into Lamar University’s prestigious Mirabeau Scholars Program.

Attic fire on Eloise Street

At least one firefighter was injured after a home at 3935 Eloise St. in Beaumont caught fire Friday, March 1. 

J. Wayne Dyess: 1947-2013

J. Wayne Dyess, professor of trombone and director of jazz studies at Lamar University, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas. He was 65.
