Ten students of LU’s Reaud Honors College are taking on the spring semester with a new perspective thanks to their studies on sustainability in Belize over the winter break.

“It was really eye opening,” said Taylor Marshall, a junior biology major and Spanish minor from Saratoga. “The culture and the wildlife and the challenges that Belize faces were all so new to me, but those same issues affect a lot of people.”

A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Joal Morgan Riley, 47, for aggravated assault upon a public servant, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office announced Feb. 8.

Riley’s indictment stems from an altercation Dec. 22. Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD) reported a 911 call at 6:33 p.m. stating that an officer was being assaulted at Willow Lakes Apartments.


Whether seeking an elected seat on the Beaumont Independent School District Board of Trustees or an appointed seat on the same school district’s Board of Managers, those interested in sitting on the dais come May 2017 are now putting their intentions in writing as the deadline to file for either position quickly approaches.

Francisco Moreno was just 18 when drunk driving led to the death of his friend, Fernando Sanchez-Garcia, 19. Speeding down a Port Arthur roadway, Moreno lost control of the vehicle he was driving – a truck belonging to Sanchez-Garcia – flipping the automobile multiple times, ejecting both teenagers, pinning one. It was this Dec. 12, 2015, wreck that killed the passenger and left the driver facing charges connected his friend’s tragic ending.
