In October, The Examiner reported in-depth on the upward trend of use of the deadly drug phencyclidine in Southeast Texas. At the time, Beaumont Police Department Sgt. Bryan Baker said that PCP use has increased significantly in the area throughout the years.

“Drugs tend to follow a trend,” explains Baker. “They go in cycles.”

He said currently PCP use is up, and he and his fellow narcotics officers are seeing much larger quantities during busts.

A fire alarm at Mauriceville Elementary alarmed some local parents and other citizens after confusing information was circulated via social media, Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD reports.

Fire in Beaumont

Beaumont firefighters battled an early morning structure fire in the 1600 block of Corley Street at about 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 16, reports Beaumont Fire and Rescue.

Suspects, victim's truck, current suspected vehicle

Two suspects believed by sheriff's investigators to be responsible for the murder of 85-year-old Herbert Deaton of Jasper County are still at large and on the run but are no longer using the victim's truck, which was recovered in Abilene, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office reports.


Members of the Beaumont City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, Dec. 16, to appoint William "Bill" Sam to fill the unexpired term of Ward 4 Councilman Jamie Smith, who recently won a bid to serve as Jefferson County District Clerk starting in January 2015.
