On Wednesday, March 9, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas and Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) hosted local physicians at a preceptor welcome reception in the David N. Parmer Conference Room at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas.

The purpose of this event was to extend gratitude to the Baptist physicians who have volunteered to teach SHSU-COM medical students and provide information to physicians interested in the teaching opportunities to train the next generation of physicians.

The mission of Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine is to prepare students for the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with an emphasis toward primary care and rural practice, to develop culturally aware, diverse, and compassionate physicians, who follow osteopathic principles, who are prepared for graduate medical education, and will serve the people of Texas with professionalism and patient-centered care.

“We are tremendously grateful for the commitment of Sam Houston State University and the Texas State University System in addressing the physician shortage in one of the most medically underserved regions in Texas,” said Todd Senters MHA, FACHE, Associate Vice-President of Operations at BHSET. “It is essential that we not only address the physician shortage, but we equip this next generation of medical providers with the skills, abilities, and innovativeness to provide leading-edge medical care for all of Southeast Texas, now and for generations to come.”

Dr. Mary Hogan, Director of Clinical Education reported that, “Many dedicated physicians throughout Southeast Texas have volunteered to serve as preceptors, and offer their time, knowledge, and expertise to teach our medical students. Baptist Hospitals will serve as an important site where our SHSU-COM third- and fourth-year medical students will complete their clinical rotations beginning in August.”
