Monday, Jan. 21 – Be prepared for some delays if you are traveling westbound to Beaumont on Interstate 10 today. According to TxDOT spokesperson Marc Shepherd, the westbound left lane between Rose City and Beaumont will be closed for road work being done on the Neches River Bridge, also known as the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge, today and possibly Tuesday, Jan. 22.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. this morning, westbound traffic was backed up from the bridge to Rose City with a sweeper and road crew at work close to the downtown exit in Beaumont. Shepherd said the lane closure is temporary and necessary due to a cleanup and repair endeavor after last week’s demolition of one of the two concrete barriers between eastbound and westbound traffic on the Neches River Bridge. He explained that because only one lanee is closed, the workers are able to perform the task during the day. He said anytime two lanes must be closed, causing traffic to be restricted to a single lane, the work must be done at night.
Shepherd confirmed that traffic on the bridge would likely go down to two lanes eastbound and two lanes westbound by late February, weather permitting. He expects it to stay that way for “a little over a year” while workers demolish and rebuild the eastbound section of the bridge.
