Knight, who is the son of legendary college coach Bobby Knight, was the head coach at Texas Tech but was fired on March 7 after going 13-19 this season, which included a 10th place finish in the Big 12 with a 5-11 record.
Knight, 40, took over at Tech from his father midway through the 2007-08 season. He went 50-61 overall and just 16-42 in conference play. His Tech team made the post season just once and that came in 2008 when the Red Raiders advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals.
His previous head coaching stops were with the Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association and the Columbus Cagerz of the United States Basketball League. He was a collegiate assistant at Indiana, Akron and Texas Tech and was also on staff with the Connecticut Pride of the CBA.
Knight also played college basketball for his father in Indiana from 1991-95.
Lamar athletic director Larry Tidwell narrowed the coaching search down to two candidates on Monday — Knight and Alvin Brooks.
