A 35-year-old Stone Mountain, Ga., man has been sentenced to federal prison for drug violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales.
Marvin "Red" Smith Jr. pleaded guilty Nov. 4, 2010, to being involved in a conspiracy to distribute marijuana and was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone on April 4.
According to information presented in court, between December 2006 and December 2007, Smith conspired with others to ship more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana from Mexico into the Southeast Rio Grande Valley area of Texas. The drugs were then transported through the Eastern District of Texas and distributed in Georgia, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania. Smith admitted to traveling from Atlanta to the Rio Grande Valley at least two separate occasions to pick up loads of marijuana for transport back to Atlanta.
