The Jefferson County Bar Association (JCBA) will hold a free family law seminar for area veterans Friday, July 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic located at 3420 Veterans Circle in Beaumont.
The seminar will begin with a 30-minute Family Law presentation. After the presentation, volunteer attorneys will be available for brief family law advice and counseling for those veterans who request it. For veterans needing legal representation and who financially qualify, pro bono attorneys will be assigned. The guidelines have been adjusted for veterans so that they may have income up to 200 percent above the poverty level and still qualify for services. The seminar is open at no cost to any veteran or spouse of a deceased veteran from Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Liberty or Chambers counties. Appointments are strongly encouraged by calling the bar office at (409)835-8647 prior to Wednesday, July 10.
The JCBA’s legal advice clinic is part of the statewide Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans (TLTV) initiative, a program created by the State Bar of Texas and funded by The Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF) to ensure that organized legal clinics exist throughout the state to specifically assist military veterans who cannot afford or do not have access to basic legal services. TAJF is the leading funder of civil legal aid to the poor in Texas. Created in 1984 by the Supreme Court of Texas, TAJF awards millions of dollars per year that benefits hundreds of thousands of low-income Texans annually including victims of crime, abused and neglected children, veterans, the elderly and the homeless.
The program was a major initiative of 2010-11 State Bar of Texas President Terry Tottenham, according to the State Bar of Texas website.
“Our military servicemen and women have made great sacrifices in duty to their country,” said Tottenham, a former Marine. “As lawyers, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of a great many veterans — and in the families of soldiers who did not return.”
