The city of Beaumont could soon take measures to fight illegal gambling, including amusement redemption machines known as 8-liners, according to sources within the city government.
Rumor has it that the city is considering an ordinance to stiffen penalties for illegal gambling establishments in Beaumont. The city communication manager Danielle Underferth said the city is discussing the possibility of bringing something before the City Council, but before that could happen there would be a public workshop. She said no decision has been made regarding what measures might be taken in relation to illegal gambling and whether the ordinance would stiffen penalties or impose additional machine taxes, like cities such as Vidor and Bridge City have already done.
A BPD officer confirmed that the city is discussing the possibility of an ordinance to combat the illegal gambling issue but was not yet able to provide any details.
