A pedestrian fatality occurred on July 2 at the intersection of Mormon Church Road and FM 92 in Silsbee.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident took place at about 6:08 in the evening. Elton Mire, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kathy Simpson after a Dodge pickup truck struck him while he was riding his bicycle. The truck also hit a Toyota passenger vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.
David Reckaway, the driver of the Dodge truck, was headed south when he strayed from the roadway for unknown reasons, hitting the bike on the southbound shoulder and then striking the stopped Toyota, according to DPS Trooper Stephanie Davis. The driver of the Toyota vehicle, Shelly Smiley of Silsbee, was sent to Christus-St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont, where she was said to be in good condition with some abrasions and contusions. Two children, Lisa and Nathaniel Murasky, were passengers in the pickup truck and were also in good condition. Reckaway was unhurt. Further investigation is underway.
