A Beaumont woman was sentenced to five years probation and a $500 fine after she pleaded guilty to injury to a child Monday, Aug. 14.
Bonaventure V. Lee was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury May 23 for injury to a child and possession of a controlled substance after she called police on March 28 telling them she was high on PCP and crack cocaine.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Examiner, Lee called police from a pay phone at 4015 Park and said her 2-year-old daughter was with her and police needed to take Lee to the hospital.
When officers spoke with Lee, they noted “her speech was slurred and eyes were bloodshot and glassy. When she moved her arms, she was very erratic, to the point medical technicians had to restrain her. Bonaventure advised that she had smoked five cigarettes which had been dipped in PCP, and an unknown amount of crack cocaine.”
As she stood for sentencing in his Criminal District Court Monday, Judge John Stevens chastised Lee for her drug use around her children.
“You’re doing that with children around?” he asked.
Bonaventure has at least five convictions for possession of a controlled substance and has four children. According to court testimony Monday, Bonaventure was pregnant at the time of her arrest and is still pregnant.
“How many children are there? Four, and you’re expecting a fifth one and you’re smoking crack, you’re smoking PCP and embalming fluid pregnant with a child?” Stevens asked. “You were pregnant when this was happening?”
Lee’s defense argued for leniency, saying she called police on herself because she knew she needed help and was worried about her children.
Stevens wasn’t convinced.
“Now it’s up to a bunch of strangers to take care of your children,” he said. “They seem to be more worried about them than you are.”
Stevens went on to say smoking PCP and embalming fluid all in one sitting is a sure way to kill brain cells.
“There’s nothing worse than PCP and embalming fluid for your body,” he said. “The chances of you working for NASA become slim.”
