It’s that time of year again! The young ladies and staff at Girls’ Haven are holding their annual STARS dinner Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Event Centre on Crockett Street in Beaumont. The event is one of three major fundraisers Girls’ Haven has annually that provide funds for the youth living at the facility.
Girls’ Haven provides a safe, nurturing environment for girls affected by physical, sexual or emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, exploitation or severe family dysfunction. The goal of Girls’ Haven is to promote and enhance the lives of the young women in their charge, who range in age from 6 to 17 years old.
Girls’ Haven executive director Alice Teeler said the nonprofit organization depends on fundraisers to supplement grants, state reimbursements and other private donations in order to support the youth to the highest degree possible.
“A lot of the money used to care for the girls comes from the community,” Teeler said. “Really, we get donations from $50 to $5,000. People see what we do and want to help turn a girl’s tragic past into a triumphant future.”
She said all funds raised at the STARS dinner would be used for the residents’ basic needs, including shelter, clothing, food, school supplies, psychological care, therapeutic care and activities. Last year, the STARS dinner garnered approximately $30,000, which Teeler said is about what it costs to support one and a half girls annually. Currently, Girls’ Haven houses 21 residents.
In addition to the food that will be provided by local caterer Katharine & Co., a selection of fine wines will be available along with an open bar. The event will feature live and silent auctions for items including a golf cart, an elk hunt and a weekend beach cabin getaway. Music will help make the evening special, Teeler said.
“We will be honoring Mike and Myla Ramsey as our rising stars for the support in the past they have given Girls’ Haven,” Teeler said. “One hundred percent of the proceeds go to benefit the girls who are living here with us.”
Teeler said local residents have been generous in the past, and she hopes this year will be the best year yet for raising funds. She said her fundraising goal this year is to beat the $30,000 total collected at last year’s STARS dinner.
“If we could top that, it would just be incredible,” she said hopefully.
The public can help make that dream a reality by purchasing tickets to the dinner. Single tickets are $75, $150 for couples and $500 for a table of eight. Sponsorships are available starting at $500, and Teeler encourages local businesses to purchase sponsorships even if they are unable to attend.
