A five-year-old boy was killed by a gunshot wound in what sheriff's deputies are calling an accidental shooting in Vidor on Monday, Oct. 21.
According to Orange County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Clint Hodgkinson, dispatch received a call regarding the incident at a little after 3 p.m. Hodgkinson said that according to witnesses, the child was at home with his babysitter. The woman was reportedly in another room and heard something that alerted her that something was wrong. She told deputies went into the room from where she heard the noise and found the boy already injured with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. No phone was available at the home on Roberts Street in Vidor, so the babysitter carried the child to the home of his grandparents on nearby Scott Drive and called 9-1-1. Hodgkinson said first responders were unable to revive the child, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The name of the victim is being withheld at this time, deputies said.
