The Orange County Sheriff’s Office helped local children celebrate the Christmas season during their annual Blue Santa event at the VFW in Orange on Dec. 14. Officers and their families volunteered to be Blue Santa’s little helpers and distributed toys to local families who had signed up for the program. The event provided gifts for more than 300 Orange County children.
“This year’s Blue Santa program was once again a huge success,” a statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office read. “We were able to help over 344 children in Orange County. Special thanks to the Alumni Association, Sheriff’s Office Employees and all of the volunteers and sponsors from various agencies that helped to make this event a success!”
The Beaumont Police Department Blue Santa delivered gifts Dec. 12 to more than 250 children in the city. Blue Santa and his elves gathered in front of the Beaumont Police Station at 255 College then caravanned to each house.
Each year, the BPD Santa-in-Blue program delivers gifts to deserving children. Theirs is the longest running police department Christmas gift program in the area, BPD said in a press release. It started about 25 years ago when a group of midnight shift officers answered a routine call for service around Christmas time and found that the household could not afford to celebrate Christmas with their children. The officers took it upon themselves to buy, wrap and deliver gifts to this family. That small act of kindness evolved into the current formal program that delivers gifts each Christmas to children in Beaumont who might not otherwise have gifts to open on Christmas day.
