The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was notified at approximately 4 p.m. of a train derailment in the area of Highway 124 and the Goodyear plant. Responding units verified that the substance in the derailed tank car was Isoprene Stabilized. This substance is highly flammable with a flash point of -65 degrees.
Hwy 124 between Smith Road and Gaulding Road was shut down to all traffic and is expected to reopen around 2 a.m.
As of 8:45 p.m., the evacuation order for the residents in the area of the train derailment has been lifted. All residents within ½ mile of the incident on Hwy 124 will be allowed back into their residences. Authorities ask that all residents continue to shelter in place that return. Highway 124 will continue to be closed to all through traffic from Gaulding Road to Smith Road until the rail car is returned to the tracks. The Beaumont Fire/ Rescue Hazmat Team has inspected the rail tank car and found no damage. The container appears to still be sealed. The rail car will be up-righted within the next 5 hours at which time the roadway will be reopened.
