A Nederland man is in jail for allegedly dousing another man with gasoline and setting him on fire.
Police arrested Mica Distefano, 27, Thursday, Jan. 16 — 19 days after (Dec. 28) Distefano allegedly set 29-year-old Zachary Bailey, of Port Arthur, on fire while he was working on a pickup truck with two other men. Distefano and Bailey had an argument before the alleged assault, said Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush.
“There was some exchange back and forth,” Bush said.
Distefano is being charged with Aggravated Assault with Seriously Bodily Injury and is being held at the Jefferson County Jail. Judge DeRouen has set his bond at $125,000.
The incident was not gang-related, Bush said, but was especially brutal.
“This is the first case that I am familiar with in the 40 years that I’ve been with the city of Nederland that we’ve had an incident like this where someone was intentionally set on fire,” Bush said.
Bush said there were several witnesses to the incident who are cooperating with police.
Bailey is currently at UTMB in Galveston where he is being treated for 3rd degree burns on 67 percent of his body, police said in the press release.
