UPDATE (7:31 p.m. Jan. 24, 2014): The Beaumont Police Department issued the following update on Beaumont Traffic operations. All highways in Beaumont had reopened, including Interstate 10, the Eastex Freeway, Cardinal Drive, and MLK Parkway. The Purple Heart Memorial Bridge over the Neches River was open, as well.
UPDATE (4:30 p.m. Jan. 24, 2014): I-10 is flowing – slowly – both eastbound and westbound through Beaumont. The Eastex Freeway has been opened both northbound and southbound from I-10 from the north city limits and is also flowing slowly. Crews are working on the overpasses on Cardinal Drive.
The Neches River bridge on Interstate 10 in Beaumont has been closed intermittently over the last several hours, the Beaumont Police department reported in a press release at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014. As the bridge is sanded, occasionally traffic has been able to move over the bridge.
Additionally, I-10 throughout Beaumont is closed due to heavy ice conditions, the press release said. All highway traffic in Beaumont has been diverted to service roads. Detour routes to the south through Port Arthur are unavailable. Only north detours are available as alternatives.
An alternative route will be provided for eastbound I-10 traffic using Major to Highway 105 to the Eastex Freeway, then north through Lumberton and Evadale and Buna, to highway 105 and back to I-10. Another eastbound alternative is College east to MLK then north to East Lucas, then west to the Eastex Freeway, and north through Lumberton.
An alternative route for westbound I-10 traffic leaving Orange is to use Highway 105 in Vidor then to Evadale and north on 96 through Lumberton to Highway 105, then west to Major, then south to I-10.
Weather conditions are expected to remain the same throughout the day and into the evening, BPD said on its Facebook page. Because of that, road conditions will remain extremely hazardous for drivers well into the night Friday. The department asked that drivers avoid traveling on the interstate as well as bridges and overpasses.
