UPDATE: The Purple Heart Memorial Bridge over the Neches River in Beaumont was open as of 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, according to a Beaumont Emergency Management Department press release. The city hopes the bridge will stay passable; however, highways in Beaumont are becoming heavily iced. At the time of the release, actions were being taken to close all overpasses in Beaumont on Interstate 10, the Eastex Freeway and Cardinal Drive, and move all traffic to service roads, so traffic might not move very quickly.
The Texas Department of Transportation is assisting with signage and encouraging the public to use alternative routes through Beaumont if possible. Meanwhile crews are working to keep the service roads passable and get traffic moving. Traffic on MLK Parkway over Park and Pennsylvania streets has also been moved to the service roads.
An alternative route is available for eastbound I-10 traffic using Major Drive to 105 to Eastex, then north through Lumberton and Evadale and Buna, to Highway 105 and back to I-10. Another eastbound alternative is College Street east to MLK then north to E. Lucas, then west to Eastex, and north through Lumberton.
An alternative route for westbound I-10 traffic leaving Orange is to use Highway 105 in Vidor then to Evadale and north on 96 through Lumberton to Highway 105 then west to Major, then south to I-10.
