On Sunday, May 1, at 12:30 am., Beaumont police officers responded to a major crash at the intersection of College and Major.
Upon arrival, officers found a '97 Nissan had been struck from the rear by a '08 Dodge pickup. The driver of the Nissan, identified as 23-year-old Amber Hawthorne, daughter of a Jasper County constable and resident of China, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted. She was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth where she died of her injuries.
Witness statements and an investigation has so far revealed Hawthorne was westbound on College Street, proceeding through the Major Drive intersection, when she was struck in the rear by the Dodge, driven at "an extremely high rate of speed" by Michael Bass, 42, of Beaumont, according to information from BPD. The impact caused catastrophic damage to Hawthorne's vehicle and pinned her in the car.
Bass was transported to Jefferson County Correctional Facility and booked for driving while intoxicated.
