In five years, the Lamar State Seahawks in Port Arthur have gone from JUCO startup to conference champions.
Heading into the Region 14 Conference Tournament as the seven seed, the Seahawks completed the greatest run in school history with Monday’s 72-67 win over previously ranked #2 San Jacinto for the school’s first conference crown.
The Seahawks were led by sophomore Vonn Jones’ 30 points, 18 of those coming in the second half, as he keyed a huge run to help the Seahawks go on a 23-8 run to tie the game at 54 after the team found itself down 47-31 with 17:21 left in the game. Lamar State trailed 39-28 at half.
Sophomores Keenen Coleman and Dion Waiters chipped in with 14 and 13 respectively to help lead the Seahawks’ improbable run.
