Matt Cross has turned in his resignation and will no longer be the head basketball coach at Lamar State College-Port Arthur.
During his three years as the head coach of the Seahawks, Cross has helped lead the program to a 74-30 won-loss record. His teams provided many milestones in Seahawks program history: First regular-season championship, first Region 14 tournament championship, and first-ever trip to the NJCAA national tournament in Kansas.
“Although my heart is torn, I have become convinced that it is time for me to step down as the basketball coach at Lamar State and look to seek other coaching opportunities in the future,” Cross said in a press release. “It is the right thing to do at this time to allow Lamar State an opportunity to get a coach in place for the upcoming recruiting season. I have dealt with a health condition this season and I need to take some time away to address that as well as reflect on my career.”
A committee, led by Lamar State Athletic Director Scott Street, will begin the search for a new coach for the Seahawks.
