A man is dead after his car caught on fire late Thursday evening and he was unable to escape, Port Arthur Police released in a statement Friday morning. The man's identity has not been released.
According to police, the Port Arthur Fire Department was alerted just after midnight Friday to a vehicle fire at 2300 MLK on Pleasure Island. When firefighters arrived, it appeared the car left the roadway and "dropped in an opening in the ground," the report said. There was no damage to the front of the car, thus it appeared the undercarriage of the vehicle caused the grass to catch on fire which in-turn set the car on fire. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by J.P. Burnett. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
