A 39-year-old Edinburg man is in jail Thursday night after he tried to meet a 13-year-old at a park in Port Neches, Paul Lemoine of the Port Neches PD said in a release Thursday. The suspect, who's name has not been released, was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with online solicitation of a minor, which is a second-degree felony. No bond has been set as of Thursday night.
According to Lemoine, On Wednesday, May 30, it was reported to the Port Neches Police Department that a 13-year-old minor was approached by a Hispanic male at Walmart in Port Arthur and he later sent suspicious text messages to the teenager. The minor lives with his grandmother in Port Neches and she became aware of the text messages sent to her grandson by the man and alerted the Police.
Thursday, the suspect continued to send text messages to the minor and they then became sexual in nature with the suspect trying to entice the minor into meeting with him. Officers were monitoring the incoming messages and they set up a sting to apprehend the suspect. The suspect, believing that he was communicating with the minor, agreed to meet with the minor at a local park in Port Neches. Officers set up surveillance and waited for the suspect to arrive. Upon the suspect’s arrival, officers stopped the suspect and after speaking to him, he confessed to texting the minor.
