FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Lamar University women’s basketball team saw its hopes of a postseason title come to an end with a 91-65 loss to Arkansas in the first round of the WNIT on Thursday.
Lamar (25-8) couldn’t overcome a cold shooting touch in the first half. The Lady Cardinals were just 9-of-33 (27.3 percent) from the floor in the first half, including going just 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from 3-point range as Arkansas (20-11 )raced out to a 43-22 lead at intermission.
Lamar would get as close as 18 points in the second half, but the deficit was just too big to overcome. Lamar also had trouble overcoming Arkansas’ 59-37 rebounding advantage.
“We just shot it really bad,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “And we’re really pretty good shooters. And when we don’t shoot well, we tend to fall back a little bit. We don’t rebound well and we don’t play as good on defense as we normally do.”
Jenna Plumley, playing in her final game in a Lamar uniform, led the Lady Cardinals with 15 points and four assists. Kalis Loyd had 14 points, while Trashanna Smith, another senior playing her final game for Lamar, had 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Sarah Watkins led Arkansas with 25 points and 14 rebounds. C’eira Ricketts had 20 points, Quistelle Williams added 16 points off the bench, Ashley Daniels had 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Chrisstasia Walter finished with 10 points.
Despite the loss, it was still a successful season for the Lady Cardinals, who advanced to postseason play for the second year in a row. Lamar is 51-16 over the past two seasons, the most wins over two years in the history of the program.
Smith ended her Lamar career with 211 blocks, the most in school history, and 925 rebounds, second on the school’s all-time list. She also finished with 805 career points. Plumley finished her career with 1,394 points, including 986 in just two seasons as a Lady Cardinal. Her 204 3-pointers at Lamar are a school record. She finished with 571 career assists, including 399 as a Lady Cardinal, second on the school’s all-time chart.
