After coaching for 43 years, West Orange-Stark high school football coach Dan R. Hooks has retired.
Hooks, 72, announced on Friday that he accepted an incentive package offered by the West Orange-Stark school district, which means he will receive 10 percent of his $80,394.60 salary. His last day will be June 30.
In 30 years as a head coach, Hooks' overall record was 283-75-2 with a career winning percentage of .794. He won back to back 4A state titles in 1986-87, won 17 district in 29 seasons at WO-S and had a playoff record of 37-19.
Last season was a tough one for Hooks. On Sept. 17, 2010, starting quarterback Reggie Garrett collapsed and died on the sideline in a game against Jasper. Weeks later, friend and colleague coach Curtis Barbay of Newton died of a heart attack.
