The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a catastrophic major accident on Interstate 10 (mile marker 835) near Hamshire, Texas, on Nov. 22. The accident, which happened at around 8 a.m., appears to have involved more than 150 cars in an accident scene with numerous injuries. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Jefferson County Sheriff Department deputies, and medical personnel responded to the crash scene. State troopers investigated 18 separate motor vehicle crashes on Interstate 10 that damaged 95 vehicles, injured 29 people and killed two motorists —Vincent Leggio, 64, and his wife, Debra Leggio , 60, both of Pearland. The couple died after an 18-wheeler struck their 2007 Chevrolet SUV, authorities said. As many as 90 patients were transported to local hospitals, with maybe a dozen of those serious to critically injured. Many motorists with minor injuries refused medical attention at the scene.
Fourteen of the crashes occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10. Local EMS transported the injured to three area hospitals, Baptist Hospital and Christus Hospital-St. Elizabeth in Beaumont and Christus Hospital-St. Mary in Port Arthur.
I-10 eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down for several hours. Eastbound lanes were opened at about 5:30 p.m. Westbound were opened at noon. There was extremely thick fog in the area Thanksgiving morning.
DPS continues its investigation of this multiple vehicle crash and will file appropriate charges based on Texas traffic law. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
