The winner of the Spindletop Rotary Club’s Annual Soap Box Derby has taken fourth place in an international competition. Ruben Navarro of Austin represented the club in Akron, Ohio, in July at the 80th International All American Soap Box Derby Championship.

Lamar University graduate and former Port Neches-Groves High School standout Chris Stroud earned his first career victory on the PGA Tour over the weekend as he captured the Barracuda Championship.

Stroud, a two-time All-American and four-time Southland Conference champion during his time at Lamar, won a three-way playoff with Greg Owen and Richy Werenski to claim the title.

“Eleven years I’ve waited for that,” Stroud said when he was introduced as the champion. “It’s a dream come true.”

Five members of the Lamar University women’s tennis team have been named 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes, announced ITA officials. The Cardinals named to the list are freshman Jasmin Buchta, senior Katya Lapayeva, junior Stephanie Marchena, senior Talisa Merchiers and senior Anna Spengler.

PN-G quarterback commits to UT

Port Neches-Groves incoming junior quarterback Roschon Johnson recently took to his Twitter account to announce that he has verbally committed to play football at the University of Texas.

Johnson (6-1, 190) threw for 2,364 yards last season and ran for 1,488 while being named the 25-5A MVP.
