The Southeast Texas Championship was the first National Physique Committee event to be held in the Golden Triangle since 1996. Competitors gathered at the Julie Rogers Theatre in downtown Beaumont on April 23 to show who had the best physiques. Making a special appearance was National Champion and famed bodybuilder Johnnie Jackson.

May 13-15 will be designated as Jim Gilligan Days.

Heading into his final weekend as a head coach in the dugout at Vincent-Beck Stadium, the city of Beaumont made a proclamation May 10 stating that May 13-15 will be designated as Jim Gilligan Days around the town for the years of service he has provided Lamar University and the entire community.

“It was very, very nice of Mayor (Becky Ames) and the City Council to present this to me. Tell everybody they have off for the next three days,” said Gilligan with a grin.

Professional Fire Fighters Local No. 399 will host their first Hooks & Ladder Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 4, beginning at sunrise with a launch at Pine Tree Lodge at 3296 Pinetree Road in Beaumont (Labelle area).

Two former Lamar Cardinals are getting their shot to continue their playing careers at the next level. Shortly after the conclusion of the NFL draft, offensive lineman Cody Elenz and receiver Reggie Begelton each received a phone call from the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

Lamar University women’s golf team

Led by medalist Wenny Chang, the Lamar University women’s golf team won an unprecedented fourth straight Southland Conference championship on April 13.

The Cardinals led from wire-to-wire, finishing eight strokes ahead of runner-up Central Arkansas with with a score of 898 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney.
