Horsemen rally in Austin to support slot machines

More than 1,000 supporters  of horse racing and greyhound racing including those from Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park and Lone Star Park, rallied at the State Capitol in Austin on March 31 to support House Bill 2111, which would allow slot machines at licensed racetracks (horse, greyhound) and Indian Reservations in Texas.

Two other pieces of legislation, SJR 33 and HJR 111, were also spoken of. Those would allow a vote by the public to put slot machines on racetracks.

Lamar baseball knocks of Houston, 5-2

HOUSTON – Jeff Abt and Wade Mathis each drove in a pair of runs, leading Lamar University to a 5-2 win over the University of Houston in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Cougar Field.

The Cardinals return home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a three-game Southland Conference series this weekend at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Lamar and the Islanders will play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Lamar to announce Pat Knight as new basketball coach today at 3 p.m.

Knight, who is the son of legendary college coach Bobby Knight, was the head coach at Texas Tech but was fired on March 7 after going 13-19 this season, which included a 10th place finish in the Big 12 with a 5-11 record.

Knight, 40, took over at Tech from his father midway through the 2007-08 season. He went 50-61 overall and just 16-42 in conference play. His Tech team made the post season just once and that came in 2008 when the Red Raiders advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals.
