137 pounds of marijuana confiscated during traffic stop on I-10

Narcotics Task Force officers discovered 137 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on eastbound I-10 near mile marker 839 on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 12:09 p.m.

The white Chevrolet truck was pulled over for “following too closely” and “unsafe lane change” according to the statement. The officer conducting the stop noticed a strong scent of air freshener, which is “commonly used to mask the smell of marijuana.”

The officer spoke with the driver and observed “several other indicators of possible criminal activity,” according to the statement. The driver refused the officer’s request to search.

A K-9 Unit performed an open air sniff and “immediately” alerted near the cargo area of the vehicle. Officers performed a probable cause search and found three duffel bags containing 137 pounds of marijuana.

Gustavo Corpus, 23, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, a second degree felony. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $10,400 bond. Corpus is a resident of Weslaco, Texas.
